How to choose, in three steps

Ignore the marketing. Match the broker to what you actually trade.

Start with your residency

Some brokers only accept US residents; others specialize in international onboarding with W-8BEN support. If you’re outside the US, this filters the list first.

Match the product you trade

US stocks and ETFs are universal. If you need HK stocks, forex, futures, or margin at low rates, the shortlist shrinks fast.

Compare the real costs

Commissions are $0 almost everywhere. Look at: margin rates, options per-contract fees, FX conversion spreads, transfer-out fees, and inactivity rules.

For international investors

Opening a US brokerage account as a non-resident usually means: passport, proof of address, and a W-8BEN tax form (which reduces dividend withholding). Funding methods vary — wire transfer is universal; local-bank funding is the differentiator. Interactive Brokers, Webull, moomoo and Tiger all support many nationalities; the exact country list changes, so confirm during signup.
